This City and Guilds course will allow students to develop and practise the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for a career in the construction industry.

You’ll benefit from industry-trained tutors with vast experience as Carpenters and Joiners, and well-equipped industry-standard workshops, supported by a team of technicians.

All 16-19-year-olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and maths—if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade 4 (C) in these subjects. This applies to every year of their course, until they achieve the required grade 4.

Topics include:

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Maintain and use carpentry & joinery hand tools
  • Prepare and use carpentry & joinery portable power tools
  • Produce woodworking joints
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

This course is a mixture of theory and practical hands-on experience.

Homework: Self-study is expected and homework will be set at the tutors’ discretion, with materials available on the College VLE.

You could progress to the Site Carpentry Diploma L2, a site carpentry apprenticeship or employment.

You need to have a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade 2 including Maths and English language.

You will need safety footwear and normal study equipment.

A portfolio is supplied that needs to be completed by the candidate, with their practical and theoretical evidence.
