Top 10 reasons to study at college

17 February, 2021

After what seems like a lifetime at school, the thought of leaving your potential local sixth form to start a new journey at college might seem a little daunting.

But don’t worry! College is an exciting place that offers a wide range of full-time academic and vocational courses, as well as apprenticeship opportunities!

We know from speaking to other students that it’s helped them develop their independence and confidence, which has led to them meeting some incredible new people who share their interests.

Sound good to you?

Then read on and find out more about how college is the right place for you!

1. Specialist courses

We offer courses that you won’t find at a sixth form and all our specialist programmes are run alongside industry-standard equipment and facilities (we have some pretty awesome stuff!)

2. Student experience

College life is diverse and there is always something going on. From video game tournaments to impromptu jam sessions in the music faculty, our colleges offer a more adult environment for you to discover yourself while you learn.

3. Curriculum innovation

Activate Learning believes that to make your learning experience as good as it can be, we need to work with the businesses you may want to work for one day. They help us to create the content of the courses we run, which means you’ll have the skills they are looking for when you leave us and go into the workplace.

4. Individuality

We believe that everyone should be free to express themselves (within reason), which is why unless your course states you have to wear a uniform, you are free to wear your own clothes to college!

5. Health and wellness

Not everyone is the same and sometimes you might need some support to get through rough patches and achieve the things you want to. Our tutors, Student Support and Learning Support have got you covered! Whether it’s help with a bus pass or additional support with maths, we support you as much as your studies with us requires.

6. Learning schedules

Your learning schedule will feature a mix of taught lessons, supervised study and work experience. This allows students to organise their time and plan their week. Time-management at college is a must!

7. Progression

We don’t just want you to come and do a course and leave. We want you to progress and achieve the highest possible qualifications you can with us. By following our clear career pathways, you can progress to higher level programmes and learning opportunities. On completion of your programme, we ensure that there are further courses, apprenticeships or career options available for you to move on to.

8. Increased employability

Because we work so closely with so many different businesses across our region, we are confident that you will develop the key skills and attributes required for your future career as you undertake your course and exciting work experience placements.

9. Great Locations

Although we’re having to learn online at the moment, when it’s safe to do so, you can take advantage of our colleges and its well-placed locations. All our colleges offer an alternative and larger learning environment for students, so you can either study in peace or make use of our social spaces to hang -out and socialise. Plus, all the Activate Learning campuses are well-located close to shops, restaurants, cultural hotspots, amenities, and travel links – you can’t study all the time!

10. Events and Enrichment

In non Covid-19 circumstances, we would be encouraging our students to take part in as many events as they can to enrich their learning. Performing arts students in the past have gone on to Disney World and hair and beauty students to Thailand to learn the art of the Thai massage. Please be assured that we are working behind the scenes to open up as many opportunities as possible for you to take part in and enhance your learning experience.

So, there you have it – 10 reasons why college is great! However, if your mind is still not made up, why not come to a virtual Open Event and experience college for yourself?
