Supporting your child’s success: Why attendance matters

Information for parents and carers from Cheri Ashby, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Activate Learning.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We hope your child has had a relaxing half-term break. As they return to college, we want to highlight the importance of attendance and how you can support their success.

Regular attendance isn’t just about meeting our requirements at college, it’s a key factor in ensuring your child develops the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need for their future.

Why we know that attendance matters:

Missed lessons = missed learning: Students who attend regularly are statistically more likely to achieve their qualifications and with higher grades.

Routine builds resilience: Encouraging a structured approach to college life prepares them for employment, so anything you can do to support this would be appreciated.

Preparing for the workplace: We know from all the employers we work with, that punctuality and reliability are things that employers really value.

Help us to help your child

  • Check in regularly: Ask your child how their lessons are going and what they’re learning.
  • Encourage routine: Help them establish good habits, including a set wake-up time and preparation for the day ahead.
  • Stay informed: If you receive a message about attendance, it would be great if you could follow up with your child and speak to their tutor in the first instance. If further support is needed, they will be able to help direct you to the right team.
  • Get in touch: If your child is facing challenges that affect their attendance, let us know. Again, speak to their tutor in the first instance. If further support is needed, they will be able to help direct you to the right team.

On behalf of the Education Leadership Team, let’s work together to ensure your child gets the most out of their education and sets themselves up for success.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

With kind regards,

Cheri Ashby
