Activate Learning students to support music festival, Shynefest, in biggest work experience project yet.

Activate Learning is delighted to announce that it has joined forces with independent, family run festival Shynefest, which supports local and live music, to help in the delivery of the annual music event taking place across May 31 – June 1, 2024 at Merrist Wood College, working in collaboration with Activate Learning’s student community.

This will be the seventh Shynefest, since its inception in 2015 – the past two of which have been based at Merrist Wood College’s large park field within the college’s 400-acre estate.

Shynefest is the perfect way to spend the end of the half term break and have fun with a like-minded, fun seeking community of festival go-ers whilst enjoying all that the event has to offer including some great live music such as headline as well known 90s Britpop act, Dodgy, who will be playing on the Saturday night.

The largest work experience opportunity for Activate Learning students

With input from students across a wide array of subject areas at Activate Learning who have all come together to support this fantastic and already well-established annual event, this will be the largest and most ambitious student work experience project that the education group has ever taken part in.

Established in 2015, Shynefest has since become a regular feature on Surrey music scene and this year there will be a great array of fun activities for the whole family to get involved with.

It’s no mean feat pulling together a music festival and Activate Learning’s student community are enthusiastic to be involved and gain some valuable work experience.

With Business Studies students working behind the scenes handling all pre-event promotion and planning, learners from across all faculties will be running various activities and services during the festival.

Among some of the fun student led activities on offer will be: Sports students running a ‘beat the goalie’ stand; Make Up students offering festival face painting; Hairdressing students giving demonstrations and hair braiding; Hospitality and Catering students creating and selling street food; Early Years students running an activity marquee for the younger visitors; A Level students will be running a clown workshop and a literary corner; students from the Visual Arts department will be offering some ‘have a go’ art sessions and the Performing Arts team will be showcasing the best of their performances throughout the event.

Merrist Wood Public Services students will also be providing an important stewarding and information desk function across the two-day event.

Behind the scenes, the college group’s Construction learners will be helping with the build and post event break down of the staging area and fencing, as well as being responsible for site health and safety.

Great live music acts performing across the weekend

Meanwhile, the team at Shynefest have been busy booking some exciting live music including some fabulous tribute acts such as The Faux Fighters, The Marley Experience and Counterfeit Kylie as well as organising more fun activities including a silent disco and a varied array of food outlets to keep event the hungriest festival go-ers well fed!

Shyne Adcock, from the Shynefest team, said: “We are so excited to be collaborating with Activate Learning to give their learners meaningful work experience, to help equip them for their future careers.

“As a mum of a college student, I know how hard it is to find businesses willing to take the plunge and offer work experience.

“We are delighted that we can give back to our local and wider community”.

If you fancy joining in the fun across the entire two-day festival, camping and glamping on site is available along with fixed bathroom facilities in nearby blocks and breakfast catering too!
